As the COVID-19 pandemic rages worldwide, in at least 180 countries and territories as of writing, we see the temporary stoppage of both local and international flights.
Some countries have facilitated mercy flights for their stranded nationals. They limited trips to the conveyance of essential goods, health, and humanitarian operations. The airport operators have stopped regular service to help curb the spread of the coronavirus outbreak.
We all know that airports have a very dynamic operation, with established programs for maintenance, inspection, repairs, and renewals.
Because of the vital importance of the airport’s continuing operation, there are significant maintenance and upgrades that workers cannot do unless the management will call a significant disruption of service.
While the current lockdown doesn’t allow workers to report to work, we assume that before the resumption of regular airport operation after the COVID-19 outbreak is over, there will be a period of preparation.
In the present lockdown period, airport program manages, engineers and planners could implement a carpet diem strategy with the following suggested activities:
- Planning
- Engineering design
- Consultation with the airlines and other airport users
- Proposal review and approval
- Contract development and letting
- Pre-construction mobilisation
