In the previous video, Ross asked Heather to share the challenges that they encountered as they implement an asset management program with water utilities.
In this video, Ross brought up the issue of declining population in some communities and rapid growth in other communities because of economic decline or increase.
This issue isn’t only valid to New Mexico, some states, or the US in general but a common challenge to communities and nations around the world.
Heather talks about the reality of dealing with infrastructure systems that authorities have built for a way more people before than what you have now. This is a massive challenge for water utilities, said Heather.
WATCH THE VIDEO to know further what Heather shared on the impacts of declining population.
She said that the population is shrinking, but the infrastructure won’t be shrinking as your population declines.
Ross and Heather also discussed financial sustainability in operating and maintaining water utilities.
Heather expressed how do you make it work when customers aren’t willing to pay or aren’t able to pay for the rates that you will charge for a sustainable water utility management.
Will having an on-going asset management program helps the utilities handle these challenges better?
