IPENZ has been a part of the Engineering Community for almost 100 Years
The roots of IPENZ go back a century. The first professional engineering body in New Zealand, the Institute of Local Government Engineers of New Zealand, was formed in 1912.
However, it was soon obvious that a more representative engineering professional body was desired. This lead to the establishment of the New Zealand Society of Civil Engineers in 1914.
These bodies merged in 1937 and the name of the organisation was changed to the New Zealand Institution of Engineers to better reflect the increasing number of members from disciplines other than civil engineering.
