The British Hydrological Society (BHS) was formed in 1983 in response to a clear need for a new, broad-based national society for the advancement of hydrology.
The Society caters for all those with an interest in the inter-disciplinary subject of hydrology, and aims to promote interest and scholarship in scientific and applied aspects of hydrology and to foster the involvement of its members in national and international activities.
The British Hydrological Society was originally co-sponsored by the Institution of Civil Engineers and the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (formerly through the Institute of Hydrology).
The Society maintains and continues to nurture relations with learned societies in associated disciplines, particularly:
Institution of Civil Engineers (though its Water Board)
Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management
Royal Meteorological Society, the Hydrogeological Group of the Geological Society
British Dam Society
British Ecological Society
British Geomorphological Research Group
